VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Tonya from Selma, NC

SNAP-NC likes to bring to your attention people in the community who make lives a little easier for our furry friends. We hope you find this inspirational and motivating:

Tonya, since childhood, always had a soft spot for animals. She was fortunate enough to grow up around cows, horses, dogs, cats, ducks and birds. Her rescue life began in 1995 when she moved to an area where large numbers of “drop offs” occurred.

Tonya has a long list of outreach projects, which she personally fundraises for, including:

  • Spay/neuter surgeries
  • Basic medicines and vaccines
  • Materials for fences
  • Dog houses
  • Transportation for animals to make vet appointment

Tonya wants everyone to know that you don’t have to have a pet to support the effort. She says, "It's a little cliche but animals truly give you unconditional love."

We think the most amazing and inspirational part about Tonya's work is she and her friend adopted out 65 dogs last year! (WOW!)

When asked if any one particular animal has touched Tonya in a special way, she had to tell us about Miracle! In her words, "A friend was doing some outreach in the county when she ran across a dog in April 2007. When I saw the dog I could not believe my eyes;I thought this poor dog had been burned. It turned out she had an untreated case of demodex mange, needing veterinary care. She loaded up Miracle (she named her, the dog did not even have a name) and took her home. The next day the vet diagnosed Miracle with demodex and a severe skin infection, fortunately it had not gone systemic. She pulled through and now lives a happy life with my friend. It took quite a while to get her back to normal. One of her eyelids is still affected but all in all she is a healthy 70 lb dog with lots of love and energy."

SNAP-NC would like to congratulate Tonya on a job well done and keep up the good work! You are an inspiration to us all!

Quite the MIRACLE!
